Their packages come with daily site backups, anti-spam protection for your emails and lots of other useful features that you’ll need. Some of its offerings are stronger than others, though. Help & Support
Overview of 1&1 IONOS
1&1 has been trading since 1988. It became 1&1 IONOS in 2018 moving forward with its mission of empowering business through powerful technology.
It offers five different types of website hosting:
- Shared (Website Hosting)
With such a broad range of hosting on offer, it is no surprise that IONOS manages 12 million domains and holds 8 million customer contracts worldwide. That’s a lot of people! But if it was right for everyone then surely they would have a lot more. So is it right for you?
I would recommend IONOS hosting for small business that are either just starting and not looking to spend a lot on it. This is because of its all-round packages, relatively ccheap pricing, and strong focus on security and reliability.
IONOS’ online reviews are a mixed bag, with plenty of people singing it’s praises, but there is a lot of complaints about poor customer service, sneaky add-ons and hard-to-cancel direct debits. Talk from person experience I had issues with IONOS over charging, whilst also making it nearly impossible for me to cancel the subscription.
Reliability and Performance
You don’t want a car that’s constantly breaking down – especially if you have to use it every day to get to and from work. The same goes for your hosting provider. You need a reliable service that keeps your website running and doesn’t have any issues with uptime.
Uptime shows how much of the time a website is live and running, and downtime is how often sites go “down” and are unaccessible to visitors.
The first thing to say is that there is no such thing as a 100% uptime. Even if it is promised it just isn’t possible. Updates and fixes mean there will always be instances when downtime is unavoidable. But you want your proiders uptime to be as close as possible to that perfect score.
If a hosting provider is offering 100% uptime then the likelyhood is that they are either lying or they don’t do updates which isn’t safe for your website.
When it comes to features, IONOS is a mixed bag; its cloud hosting and dedicated hosting plans are fairly strong, while its shared hosting and VPS hosting are both pretty poor.
|Linux or Windows||Linux hosting||Linux hosting||Linux hosting, Windows hosting optional|
|SSL||SSL Wildcard Certificate||SSL Wildcard Certificate||SSL Wildcard Certificate|
|Storage||100GB to 500GB webspace||50GB to 160GB SSD storage||50GB to 160GB SSD storage|
|Traffic||Unlimited traffic||Unlimited traffic||Unlimited traffic|
|Email Accounts||25 to 500 email accounts||10,000 email accounts||250 email accounts|
|Domain||1 free domain for 12 months||1 free domain for 12 months||–|
Great customer support can make all the difference, and if you’re having issues with the website great customer support will usually be able to fix the issues you’re facing.
IONOS does offer 24/7 phone support, 365 days a year. This even included Christmas and there aren’t many companies that support throughout Christmas Day.
IONOS have a fully fledged knowledgebase where you can find frequently asked questions and how-to guides. IONOS have a live chat option on the website, but an agent isn’t always available to assist. Some plans, such as dedicated and VPS hosting, also offer free email support.
1&1 IONOS Hosting Review Summary
With its array of plans and extra software, such as email marketing, domain registration and website builder platform, 1&1 IONOS is ticking a lot of boxed.
It still has a lot of things to work on – its interface is outdated and confusing, while its customer support is hit and miss. However, IONOS has shown it’s taking big steps in the right direction since the rebrand in 2018.
I recommend this provider for small businesses and individuals, but not for total beginners. It has good cloud hosting and dedicated hosting plans, but anyone after shared of VPS hosting should look elsewhere. (They’re a little expensive)
1&1 IONOS has enough features and plans to really scale a business, and offers competitive prices which is great for people of companies who are starting on a budget. As said a couple of times, if you are an absolute beginner then this hosting platform isn’t for you.
